Potawatomi State Park is located west and a little north of the city of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. But, even though it’s technically a bit north of the town, it’s actually on the south side of the body of water that’s Sturgeon Bay. Hope that’s not too confusing 🙂

Like all state parks, Potawatomi State Park has a wealth of wilderness in and around the campground. It seems like most of the trees in the campground itself are older… beautifully tall and shady!

The entrance road into the park, after you leave the visitor center, takes an interesting route through the woods to the campsites. There are several very large trees that are in the middle of the road way. They’ve split the left and right portions of the road around these trees. I’m guessing this is a bit disconcerting to navigate through with a very large RV rig.

Unfortunately, there’s no sandy beach at Potawatomi State Park. The only section of “beach” they have is very stony– not the best for laying a towel down on for tanning. But, it’s a great place to practice your stone skipping.

The observation tower on the northwest end of the park is a great place to get some elevation and look around Sturgeon Bay and surrounding areas. On clear days you can see across Green Bay, which is about 15 miles away.

There also many nice, fairly level hiking trails throughout the park, which make for nice cross country ski trail in the winter.

Camper Reviews for Potawatomi State Park

by Cyndi  (Michigan)

Our friends had given Potawatomi great reviews for the fishing, SCUBA diving and all around beauty of the area so we decided to try it. The park was extremely clean and well kept. The park service people were engaging and friendly. A few times we got twisted around and they were always willing to help. We caught plenty of “keeper” fish (although we chose to release them)it was still a lot of fun. In sum, the park was terrific and we will definitely be back.

by: Tent Camper Wonderful location, Trails were great, Cost was great (it is a State Campground). The ranger absolutely ruined our weekend. My wife and I are around 40, and we had a rare weekend without kids. We are not Loud Kids ourselves! There was no need for Ranger Ripp to constantly watch us, come in our site, and harass us. Never before or since have we had to endure a ranger on such an obvious ego trip. I don’t have enough room here to list all the cases of clear power abuse. I just can’t believe my tax dollars pay her salary. You’re quite a public servant, Ranger Ripp. If you’re ok with constant harassment, go ahead and go, the park itself is quite nice.

by: Sailtosunset I have lived in Wisconsin for over 60 years and have always enjoyed the State Parks.Last year my ex-wife, our daughter, and myself put in at Sawyer Harbor in kayaks. We paddled the entire length of the park. The beauty is breathtaking.I recommend anyone and everyone to paddle, row, or float this scenic expanse.
